Facebook Pumps Money Into Economy as IPO Approaches

m6Ja797j Facebook Pumps Money Into Economy as IPO Approaches

Facebook is generating money in a troubled global economy, COO Sheryl Sandberg said, pointing to the site’s increasing value as it heads toward its initial public offering.

Sandburg, speaking at the DLD Conference in Munich, held to spotlight top contributions in the digital and technological world, saying Facebook added .3 billion in value to the European economy last year alone.

Those numbers are likely to keep growing as Facebook expands, but the dollars aren’t just coming in through people who post status messages. The real money behind Facebook is through its advertising sales, which exceed those of any other website.

Sandberg said the European business report, derived from a Deloitte study, shows the social media site has far more value than “just posts and pictures and the fun things with friends.”

According to a Facebook report about the study, European businesses — just like those in the U.S. — are using the site to connect with customers, to advertise and build up brand identity. Thousands of companies make Facebook apps, and technology manufacturers are selling smartphones and tablets to users so they can connect from anywhere, expanding the service’s mobile reach.

In addition, business associated with the company was responsible for 232,000 jobs in Europe alone this year, said Sandberg, who closed the conference.

Facebook plans to start a promotion in Europe, similar to the one in the U.S., to give about in free ad credits to 50,000 European small businesses, according to Sandberg, who noted that while seems a minor amount, it is enough for businesses to reach their target customers on Facebook.

The Deloitte study, which details the growing value of Facebook, could give the company further ammunition for its IPO. Facebook will need to convince investors the site is highly profitable through its advertising, so the stock prices will continue to climb.

Financial experts already believe Facebook’s IPO could bring in billion dollars or more, but investors could be wary if they’re not convinced that the site is profitable or secure, unlike other social media sites like the now-little-used MySpace, which was once the giant in the market.

Sandberg noted several European companies are already taking advantage of the significant business opportunities Facebook offers, including social game maker Wooga and Swedish music service Spotify, which allows Facebook users to enjoy music together and recently launched in the U.S.

Even though the average Facebook user has 130 friends, research shows “the distance between one person and one million is four steps,” Sandberg said. In other words, if just four people share content, it can reach one million users.

Sandberg said Facebook now drives more traffic than any other site, except Google, and Web visitors referred through Facebook are more engaged than others. This could lead to even more advertising dollars for Facebook, adding value not only to the site but to businesses looking to contact large audiences quickly.

Sharp, Q-Pot Phone to Delight Chocolate Lovers

y8Rb385v Sharp, Q Pot Phone to Delight Chocolate Lovers

Sharp is collaborating with accessory maker Q-Pot on a phone that looks like a bar of chocolate, to be released in Japan just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Japanese company Q-Pot made its name in faux chocolate-covered accessories, and the upcoming Sharp smartphone is no exception. Designed by Tadaaki Wakamatsu, the phone features a rear panel that looks like a “three-dimensional melting chocolate block” and an Android 2.3 skin that makes the screen appear as if chocolate is oozing over it.

The smartphone doesn’t offer any out-of-the-ordinary features besides its novel look, but it could appeal to Japanese consumers as a unique Valentine’s gift, especially considering Sharp will produce it in a limited run of 50,000.

Smartphones are ubiquitous in Japan, and distinctive models that stand out from the crowd are in high demand among consumers there.

Last year, luxury crystal maker Baccarat launched a smartphone with Sharp in Japan, which featured an image of a crystal chandelier on its case and showed images of crystal tumblers and wineglasses to signal outgoing and incoming calls, highlighting the Japanese market’s desire for stylish, high-end smartphone models, along with cute, novelty ones like the upcoming chocolate phone.

Despite new handsets hitting the market every few weeks, most smartphones follow a fairly standard, expected form. But, a few designers get inspired to break out of the mold and create unusual designs.

For example, last year’s Origami handset created by Chengyuan Wei was made of paper and arrived flat, then transformed into a 3D handset when it was folded. Other specialty phones target elite customers, such as the solid gold Aesir phone available in Russia, while some focus on fun, such as the Nexus S robot phone from toymaker Hasbro.

Whether consumers view it as a silly diversion or a grand, romantic gesture, Sharp’s chocolate phone just might replace the traditional box of chocolates as a way to say “be mine” in Japan next month.

Twitter Users Dismantle McDonald’s Campaign

o4Wt888k Twitter Users Dismantle McDonalds Campaign

McDonald’s Twitter promotion recently capsized, thanks to users’ overlooked creativity, highlighting the pitfalls of social media advertising as business usage of it burgeons.

The fast food company meant to share supplier stories in a #MeetTheFarmers campaign, but users hijacked the related #McDStories hashtag and upset the entire promotion.

For example, @flatfootphil’s story about the Golden Arches was less than savory. “McDStories…a nice juicy Filet o’fish. With added worm. Still alive. Nice. Never again,” he wrote.

@MuzzaFuzza added, “I haven’t been to McDonalds in years, because I’d rather eat my own diarrhea.”

“McDStories: McDialysis? I’m loving it!” enthused another Twitter user.

Comments in this vein resulted in #McDStories’ demise only two hours after its creation.

But McDonald’s is not the only organization to endure online bashing during an advertising campaign, as social media promotions are quickly proving to be a double-edged sword.

For instance, Australia’s Qantas airlines took an online beating after inviting Twitter users to describe their “dream luxury in-flight experience.” This campaign went awry as angry customers fantasized about a company that gave “more than 3mins notice that the whole airline is on strike.”

Kenneth Cole also felt the heat after marketing its products during the Arab Spring. “Millions in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available,” the company wrote last February, provoking outrage at the comparison.

Non-profit organizations have experienced similar issues during their online campaigns. @LGBTfacts, for example, began as an online resource for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. But it quickly devolved into a stream of offensive remarks as users offered up their own LGBT “facts.”

Mike Stuchbery, for example, proclaimed, “When cornered, the male homosexual can shoot glitter into the eyes of an attacker to blind them.”

Social media advertising has taken off over the last years, prompting many corporations and organizations to plug in for greater brand recognition. It is now a multimillion-dollar enterprise and shows no signs of slowing down.

But comments like Stuchbery’s suggest online crowdsourced promotions may not always help companies and organizations seeking to get an Internet boost. In fact, if they are not careful about social media advertising, corporations may quickly become laughing stocks in the online world, unless they manage their real-world reputations first.

Obama Calls on Tech Sector to Boost Economic Recovery

z9Ml767h Obama Calls on Tech Sector to Boost Economic Recovery

President Obama stressed ways tech companies like Apple can boost America’s economic recovery, calling for an end to moving jobs and resources offshore.

In his State of the Union address, the President referred to the technology sector many times in last night’s speech, which included Steve Jobs’ wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, as an invited guest, seated in First Lady Michelle Obama’s box. As television cameras focused on Jobs’ widow, President Obama described fostering a culture of talent, skill, and innovation in the U.S. similar to the one famously upheld by Apple’s co-founder.

“An economy built to last is one where we encourage the talent and ingenuity of every person in this country…we should support everyone who’s willing to work; and every risk-taker and entrepreneur who aspires to become the next Steve Jobs,” he said.

At the same time President Obama praised Jobs’ talent and work ethic, however, he criticized companies that shift jobs and financial assets offshore as a way to reduce their tax burden, and called for legislation that would put an end to the practice.

The President’s remarks were not directed solely at Apple, since many U.S. corporations engage in offshore manufacturing and sales. However, Apple is one company that depends heavily on manufacturing products and generating profits overseas to avoid high taxes and keep its supply chain flowing smoothly.

Apple, Google, and Cisco are among several multinational companies currently pressing lawmakers for a tax break, on the grounds they will bring more than .3 trillion in profits earned overseas back to the U.S. if they are exempted from paying federal income taxes on the foreign earnings.

In yesterday’s earnings report, Apple specifically mentioned it has more than billion in cash offshore, perhaps sending a message to the Obama administration it is looking for an incentive to bring the funds back home.

In his address, Obama alluded to a plan to offer tax breaks to companies that bring jobs and revenue stateside, but he did not provide details of how the plan will work. Tax breaks could encourage Apple and other technology giants to repatriate money earned on sales in countries such as China, potentially strengthening the U.S. economy.

The Fair Labor Association is also scrutinizing conditions in Apple’s manufacturing business in China. Audits last year revealed repeat offenses of substandard working conditions and poor treatment of workers at the company’s Foxconn factory, which reportedly led to a string of suicides in 2010.

However, Obama recognized the factors that hold companies back from hiring in the U.S. He mentioned the many open technology-sector jobs, and the lack of talented, skilled workers to fill them, despite large numbers of people looking for work. He stressed the need for partnerships between technology companies and higher education, ensuring a skilled American workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs that will reduce companies’ dependence on foreign labor.

In addition to being Apple’s manufacturing base, China represents the company’s fastest-growing market. Earlier this month, police called off the opening of Apple’s Beijing retail store after crowds waiting for the 4S launch grew so large they threatened public safety. As the U.S. technology market grows more crowded and competitive, Apple and its rivals increasingly look to foreign countries as a source of profits.

Apple’s operations in China are key to its supply chain and revenues, and the company isn’t likely to bring its entire operation back to the U.S., despite Obama’s urgings. However, if the policy changes the President is calling for become reality before his term ends, Apple and other companies could be facing big changes in how they do business.
